  The festival

The Festival brings together internationally renowned artists in a musical celebration that joins the dynamism and international participation that attracts more than 10,000 people each year. An emotional and extraordinary event, the Festival is set in a thousand year old frame that highlights the harmonies of a magical meeting between history, the locations, and the music.

The Festival has become one of the most eagerly anticipated cultural reference points of the season.  Critical acclaim has been given by both national and international press: “the Spoleto like, Alba Music Festivalo” from la Repubblica, “Alba, the music party’s here!” from Specchio, “Alba is all music” from il Secolo XIX, and “Making musica Bella” from Maryland Weekend. The Festival has added significantly to the development of the City of Alba and is financed in part by the Region of Piemonte as part of the “Piemonte dal Vivo” circuit  (Piedmont Live).

As the only festival in Piemonte with international partnership, the Alba Music Festival takes shape from both the cultural and artistic relationship between the City of Alba and St. Mary’s College of Maryland USA, a prestigious college in the region of Washington D.C. Thanks to this strong relationship, this event has become an occasion of international meeting and cultural dialogue, and of extraordinary concerts with widespread appeal.

The Festival stages concerts in the most prestigious places in Alba and the surrounding region in a way which takes full advantage of the evocative architecture of area, such as the mirror-like stalls of Teatro Sociale, the thousand year old San Domenico church, the impressive San Paolo temple, to the refined Ferrero Foundation Auditorium. From the majestic atmosphere of a cathedral or the intimate one of a baroque church such as San Giuseppe, Santa Caterina, or Maddalena Choir, in addition to the many majestic castles scattered throughout the surrounding countryside, the various settings serves as idyllic backdrops for each concert. These churches bear witness to the art of the past, the historical wine cellars and the evocative corners of precious country: musical art in magical places of a beautiful corner of Piemonte.

Festival concerts, which are free and open to the public, feature renowned artists from over twenty countries, more than 100 American students, and guest artists, joined by various Italian musicians, ensembles, and orchestra.  Audiences express their enthusiasm by filling every seat each night. In past years the Festival has included a charming and prestigious array of programs and guests including a performance by American virtuoso Jose Miguel Cueto on the Stradivari “Vesuvius” violin made available courtesy of the Community of Cremona, a monographic program dedicated to Arvo Parte’s works, piano recitals by Brian Ganz, the winner of first prize at the Long-Thibaud International Competition, a performance of Gershwin concerto by Bruno Canino, Storie di Tango with the renowned Italian actor Arnoldo Foà, voice recitals with Angela Horn, James Allbritten, Thomas Barrett, and Olivia Vote, a performance of Mozart’s Requiem conducted by Larry Vote, a performance of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with the Romanian State Orchestra conducted by Jeff Silberschlag, the Italian premier of Dracula, an opera by David del Tredici with Singer Katherine Wessinger, a performance of Scott Wheeler’s Piano Concerto by Eliza Garth, and Bach’s Baroque Contatas, jazz performances featuring Don Stapelson, in addition to numerous others.

The Festival presents numerous educational exchanges such as David Froom’s composition workshops, jazz workshops with Don Stapelson, in addition to numerous other instrumental workshops with Festival soloists and guests. In addition, Bruno Murialdo’s photography exhibition featured 80 portraits and scenes of the Festival displaying the artists and the festival in stunning photographs. Collaboration with other important art operators, such as Aganahuei Arte Industriale and the Bondonio Comandona Art Gallery have also aided in the development of the Festival.

After receiving widespread press attention on both the national and international stages, in addition to broadcast coverage on RAI and Maryland Public Television, the Festival was presented at the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C. in November 2004 and at the Beijing Embassy in September 2005. The Festival hosted ten American journalists from The Washington Times, The San Diego Union-Tribune, Los Angeles Times Magazine, New York Post, Boston Globe, and National Geographic Traveler in a project created jointly by St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Alba Bra Langhe Roero Tourism Board, and the Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourism Consortium.

The Festival shares and supports a rich treasure of arts and traditions with several local institutions. The list of partners and friends who have collaborated for the success of the Festival include: the City of Alba, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Piemonte Region, Consiglio Regionale of Piemonte, the Provincia of Cuneo, the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation of Cuneo, Ferrero Foundation, Alba Bra Langhe Roero Tourism Board, the Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourism Consortium, San Paolo Society, Gazzetta d’Alba, Alba Traders’ Association, Anferr, and Bullock’s Music USA, among numerous others.
